Creating Professional Invoices Without Accounting Software

When I started freelancing, I spent $15/month on invoicing software for features I did not need — recurring billing, payment processing, client portals. All I actually needed was a way to create clean invoices with my company name, client details, line items, and a total. So I built one.

What a Good Invoice Needs

A professional invoice should include: your business name and contact info, the client name, an invoice number and date, line items with descriptions and amounts, and a clearly displayed total. Optional but recommended: payment terms (Net 30, due on receipt), accepted payment methods, and a thank-you note.

Invoice Numbering

Use a consistent format: INV-2026-001, or the timestamp-based system our generator uses (INV-XXXXXX). Sequential numbering helps with bookkeeping and tax preparation. Never reuse invoice numbers — it creates confusion for both you and your client.

Print or Save as PDF

The generator opens a print-ready page. Use your browser "Save as PDF" option (Ctrl+P, then select Save as PDF) to create a clean PDF file. This works on all modern browsers and produces a file suitable for email or record-keeping.
